Stopping / Holding Applications


The products in this category are friction brakes which are designed to stop shafts. Stopping applications fall into two categories:

Cycling Brake Applications
The brake is required to perform repeated stopping. A typical application requires multiple engagements per minute or hour. Brakes used for cycling applications are selected to provide consistent performance and service life.

E-stop Brake Applications
The brake is required to bring the system to rest within a specified time and absorb the full energy of the stop during an Emergency situation. A typical application requires rare or infrequent engagements. Brakes used for e-stop applications are selected to have the capacity to perform the stop within the specified period of time but not to do so on a continuous or repeated basis.

Function: Holding, Failsafe (Non-Cycling Applications)
Drive Arrangement: Machine Frame or Bracket to Shaft

  • Spring pressure compresses drive and friction discs to produce a fixed amount of torque.
  • Air pressure is applied to disengage the brake.

Drive Arrangement: Motor to Gear Reducer (Gear Box)

  • Spring pressure compresses drive and friction discs to produce a fixed amount of torque.
  • Air pressure is applied to disengage the brake.

Function: Stopping, Holding (Cycling Applications)
Drive Arrangement: Machine Frame or Bracket to Shaft

  • Applying air pressure compresses drive and friction discs to produce torque.
  • Torque is proportional to the air pressure applied.
  • Separator springs assure full brake release when air pressure is absent.
